That was my family while I was growing up in Canada. Many Hong Kong families were (and some still are) like this, where one parent (most likely the father) remains behind while the other (mostly the mother) lives abroad with the children.

A variation to this equation is both parents remain behind and the children are sent to live with relatives or at a boarding school.
