Final Thoughts

Well, this is interesting.

I just heard the NPR announcer refer to the fact that there will “possibly and quite likely” be a Democratic Senate. This is important, since it's crucial for Dems to be assertive about their leads in Montana and Virginia (otherwise you get Florida 2000). Remember that the Senate is crucial because it controls judicial nominations, so this is really worth fighting for.

And there will be a bunch of recounts in the House, though when the dust settles the Dems will have gained about 30 seats. Between that, the governorships, and the legislatures, this is really an outstanding performance and will hopefully lay groundwork for the next six years. Also worth noting (and enjoying) is that this is the first time in US history that a party has not gained a single seat in the Senate, House, or governor's offices — the Republicans went 0-for-however many races in which they ran.

All in all, an incredible set of results. I'm going to spend some time enjoying them. When that's done, however, I have to say that it's going to be very interesting to see how Bush governs in the next two years.

No New Republicans! That's a sweet headline for the day.

It's time for Cheney and Rumsfeld to walk the plank. Let a thousand investigations bloom!

I doubt adversity will make an adult of our President though. Bill C., will you call him and give him some tips?

Rumsfeld down, but I find myself strangely unable to enjoy it.

Also, control of the Senate has come down to the last race. Some experts say that if there is a recount a winner won't be declared until Dec. 21st, at which point I believe we'll be able to say, Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus!

Looks like Rumsfeld got hung before Saddam — hung out to dry, that is. I've been watching the news lately, and a couple of people put their finger on what was bothering me, namely that dumping Rumsfeld doesn't mean anything until a new policy is announced.

Also, his replacement is still a Bush loyalist, one who has been in exile at Texas A&M. On the bright side, he is on the record as advocating direct negotiations with Iran.

As for Virginia, the AP and NBC have called it for the Dems, and NPR reports that voting there was very efficient. The last time Virginia recounted, there were only four disputed ballots. Some convervatives are calling for Allen to concede, and rumors say the White House and the party are also against drawing it out.

So the big questions now are what will the Democrats' agenda be and can they consolidate power in 2008?
